The Closure

The year is 2040. Climate change, law enforcement crackdowns, and wealth discrepancies are intensifying at an exponential rate. In light of this, a suburban, affluent community known as “The Bluffs” decides to physically and virtually wall itself off from the poorer and more chaotic world that surrounds it. This event, informally dubbed by media outlets as “The Closure”, has been the talk of the town amongst Bluffs inhabitants. Seven days prior to The Closure, we meet Bry, a non-binary prodigal kid returning to The Bluffs to attend their mother’s funeral. It’s been several years and two dead parents since Bry has returned. After gaining notoriety on a controversial augmented reality platform, they were ostracized by their parents and town alike. Bry moved away into a “dicey” nearby metropolis, and hasn't looked back since. Bry, along with their queer partner Riv, wants to make this hometown trip as brief as possible, in hopes they can quickly collect their fair share of the Mother’s will. At the funeral, however, Bry and their estranged sisters discover that their Mother has left in her last will and testament a scavenger-hunt style series of challenges. Now the whole family must track down clues and complete the puzzle of their past before securing any inheritance for anyone. Within a one-week ticking time bomb of The Closure, and under the cheerful surveillance of GNOMI (The Bluffs’ own superintelligent A.I. garden gnome) Riv must help Bry and their sisters to secure each other’s futures. If Bry’s family can’t put their differences aside and work together, an impenetrable barrier surrounding The Bluffs will shut permanently, with Bry and Riv stuck on the wrong side! Is there a “right” side of The Closure to be trapped on, and if so, which is it?
