It’s winter 1982, in the authoritarian nation of Arstotzka. One “lucky” citizen is ripped from their home on the distant plains, and installed as the new immigration INSPECTOR at a border checkpoint in the capital. This is a treacherous position. A war with the neighboring nation of Kolechia has just ended, a new border wall is under construction, the checkpoint is overcrowded with travelers in dire circumstances, and government scrutiny is constant – particularly from the VOICE OF ARSTOTZKA, an uncanny figure of propaganda. Under her watchful eye, the Inspector must process an endless line of entrants perfectly. The Inspector’s spouse, SASHA, recently died in an “accident” at the border wall; at first, the Inspector views their new assignment as a means to find out the truth behind Sasha’s death. But every action they take only draws them deeper into the lives of others around them. SERGEI, a soldier favored by the regime, offers to find Sasha’s records…but only once the Inspector sponsors his Kolechian girlfriend ELISA’s refugee visa. CALENSK, a streetwise border guard, knows just who to bribe to get Elisa’s visa approved…but takes a cut of the cash to further his daughter’s education. MIKHA, an underground punk rocker and dissident, can help Elisa find a job in Arstotzka…when her resistance group isn’t busy secretly destabilizing the Arstotzkan government. And every new entrant at the checkpoint has a story to tell… Buffeted by these competing needs, the Inspector begins to open up to the people around them – becoming more invested in the here-and-now, and trying to help their new friends. But every risk they take for one person threatens to put another in danger, making their choices continually more complex. As tensions mount, the Inspector is implicated in an international smuggling conspiracy. With their freedom on the line, will they try to escape, reform the system, or start a revolution? Thankfully, the Inspector won’t make their decisions alone. The citizens of Arstotzka – that is, the show’s AUDIENCE – guide the Inspector by periodically voting on whether to admit key checkpoint entrants into the country. The decisions they make ripple through the story, affecting characters from refugees to rebels, and impacting the Inspector’s goals, experiences, and ultimate fate…including whether or not they survive. A dystopian thriller about making hard decisions in a bad situation, Papers, Please (The Musical) adapts the award-winning computer game of the same name. Tonally, the show sits between Fiddler on the Roof and Moulin Rouge, and is brought to life by ~10 diverse cast members in a two-act, 120-minute musical for teen and adult audiences. The show’s world blends the aesthetics, social dynamics, and sounds of the Soviet and American 1980s, featuring sparse yet vivid visuals, and music that sets folky heartsongs and punk anthems against the bombastic showstoppers of the State. Arstotzka is far away and long ago, but it’s also right here, right now, in the place where you live. Whose freedom will you choose to fight for?
